Galilee Field Study

Our field study was to Galilee this time! It was so much fun. First stop, Caesarea. This was a small fishing village called Stratos Tower until Herod the Great came along and forced an unnatural port here. It was an amazing feat building here – and it included some new technology (underwater cement!) to make it work. Today we can see the remains of his palace here, the theatre and hippodrome, and aqueduct. Also, the remains of a Crusader fort from later in history are here. It’s beautiful here….right on the coast of the Mediterranean. Today the surrounding area is an upscale neighborhood---and for all you golfers, the only golf course in Israel is here.

Here is the site….

Me and the site….

Walking in the top of the aqueduct….

I still can’t get over what fun field studies are….I mean, who gets to sit looking out from Mt. Carmel, learning about the land and revisiting the story of Elijah and the Prophets of Baal?? We do!

Here is our fearless leader, Dr. Wright, captured amidst one of his famous teaching poses. This time we are on the Nazareth ridge, with the Jezreel Valley down below.

Sometimes craziness goes on…it’s a good thing.

And sometimes you get to take AMAZING hikes in beautiful places….like Mt. Arbel, looking down on the Sea of Galilee.

Would an American park service allow trails like this?

And sometimes….class involves swimming in beautiful places! How spoiled are we??

On a more serious note….graven images in synagogues??? I have gained a whole new perspective on the term “Galilee of the Gentiles”.

Only one field study left - JORDAN!!
